Mrs Nicholas Monro
1966 – 1969
Oil on canvas
127 × 122.5 cm
The Howard Hodgkin retrospective at Tate Britain covers his entire
professional career, from the 1950s to the present day. He claims never
to have created an abstract painting in his life. If one takes
cognizance of the titles of his works, then this assertion can be seen
to be true. His glorious use of vivid, thickly-layered colours, his use
of the picture frame as part of the composition, and his depiction of
his subjects from memory and as clearly-defined objects, mark him as one
of the foremost British artists of today.
