Here is yet another all-female, alt-folk band from Canada, following closely on the heels of the Be Good Tanyas and the Wailing Jennys (Trish Klein even seems to be a member of both Po’ Girl and the Be Good Tanyas). However, Po’ Girl are decidedly less rural and less sweet-sounding than the others. There is a much harder, biting edge to their music, although the musicianship and the vocal harmonies are just as superb as the others. For those who think folk music should be both dainty and doleful, with pretty melodies sung by pretty voices, Po’ Girl could be a revelation. There are no finger-in-the-earhole dirges here, just well-crafted songs constructed with love and affection. And the combination of clarinet and banjo is just like tomatoes and almonds in cooking — magic!
