To talk of Sigur Rós' music in terms of Iceland's awesome natural combination of glaciers, volcanoes, and sparse, frozen landscapes would be a cliché, but nonetheless most appropriate. This is ambient music for a wild and unfettered land However, any comparison between this type of ambience and that created by the likes of, say, Tangerine Dream would be completely useless. Takk… has its quietly restrained, even fragile moments. But it is mainly characterized by drone-like, guitar-driven, loud banging and crashing wall-of-sound noise which would frighten even Phil Spector. This is not music to be played without listening. It demands concentrated attention; and although it can be quite scary at times, the overall feel is not forbidding, but beautifully uplifting.
