After too many years of inane, pretty-boys and pretty-girls pop music, it's so refreshing to have the reappearance of Britpop again. Along with bands like Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs are at the forefront of the move back towards class pop. In a long tradition stretching back to the Small Faces and the Kinks, via XTC, Kaiser Chiefs manage to combine power-pop with a peculiarly British approach to songs and lyrics — incorporating both whimsy and rebellion. Although the songs are unforgettably melodic, quirky, and full of all the best pop hooks, this is not music for the feint of heart. It's loud, in-your-face, and hard-edged. Derivative? Of course it is. But it also oozes intelligence, funk, and fun!
