The unmistakeable voice of Richie Havens, together with his inimitable guitar strumming, is much in evidence on his latest album, Grace of the Sun. It’s 35 years since he delighted and amazed with his innovative combination of soul and the acoustic guitar. Fittingly, he includes the Joni Mitchell song “Woodstock” on the album, along with the frequently covered Dylan classic, “All Along the Watchtower”. But although there’s nothing leading-edge about the album, it is not rooted in the past. The arrangements of both the aforementioned, along with all the other songs on this album, is unusual and fresh. This is warm and sincere music, created by a master who is obviously dedicated to his craft. With his long silver beard, Richie Havens may be intent on impersonating Father Time, but judging by Grace of the Sun, there’s plenty of life and energy left in him yet.
